Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my watch dial needs repainting or just cleaning?
The decision depends on the extent of deterioration. Surface dirt and light discoloration can often be addressed through careful cleaning. However, if the dial has significant paint loss, flaking, severe water damage, or irreversible colour changes, repainting becomes necessary. We assess each dial thoroughly and discuss the most appropriate approach with you before any work begins.
What does the Master Watchmaker Assessment include?
The assessment provides a comprehensive evaluation covering movement condition, case integrity, dial and hands, bracelet or strap condition, water resistance testing where appropriate, and overall authenticity verification. You receive a detailed written report with photographs, timing data, and prioritised recommendations. This service is particularly valued by those considering a purchase, preparing to sell, or seeking an objective overview of their watch's needs.
How long does dial repainting typically take?
Dial repainting is a careful process that typically requires three to four weeks. This allows adequate time for proper documentation, surface preparation, base coat application and curing, precise re-application of indices and text, and final quality verification. We understand the importance of your timepiece and approach each stage with appropriate attention rather than rushing the work.
Can all mineral crystals be polished?
Mineral glass crystals respond well to careful polishing, and many surface-level scratches can be significantly reduced or removed. However, deep chips or cracks require replacement rather than polishing. We assess the crystal's condition before beginning any work and discuss the most suitable approach. Polishing is generally an economical option for watches with mineral crystals that have accumulated wear marks over time but remain structurally sound.
What are your service rates?
Our rates reflect the time, skill, and materials required for each service. Dial Repainting is MYR 1,200, Master Watchmaker Assessment is MYR 450, and Mineral Crystal Polishing is MYR 90. These are base rates; any additional work discovered during assessment would be discussed with you before proceeding. We provide detailed estimates and never undertake additional work without your prior agreement.
Do you work on all watch brands?
We work on a wide range of mechanical timepieces, from well-known manufacturers to independent makers. Each watch presents its own particular considerations, and we assess whether we have the appropriate knowledge and equipment before accepting a project. If a watch requires specialised tools or expertise beyond our current capabilities, we would inform you honestly rather than attempting work we cannot complete to a satisfactory standard.
